Counter narcotics training committee takes stock of 2013 work

Representatives from NATO-Russia Council Counter Narcotics Training Project contributing nations met in Brussels on 19 April, to review training underway, and taking place in 2013. They were updated on the great start to 2013, with around eight counter narcotics training courses taking place in April alone. This month’s training is taking place at fixed training centres in St. Petersburg, Moscow, Ankara, and Krasnoyarsk as well as mobile training in Turkmenistan and Tajikistan.

Ministers Launch Afghan Helicopter Project’s Second Phase

NATO-Russia Council Foreign Ministers officially launched the second phase of the Helicopter Maintenance Trust Fund today. Phase 2 will significantly expand the assistance the Trust Fund is providing to the Afghan Air Force. Not only will it offer more maintenance training on Mi-17 and Mi-35 helicopters, as well as spare parts. It will also support the Medical Evacuation capabilities of the Afghan Air Force by providing a conversion kit to transform a Mi-17 helicopter into a fully equipped flying ambulance.

Expanding Scientific Cooperation

On the 27th March 2013, Moscow State Linguistic University (MSLU), with support of the NATO Information Office (NIO) in Russia, hosted a role play called “Partnership of Russia and NATO in the framework of addressing contemporary challenges and threats”. Students of this prestigious university played the roles of Permanent Representatives of member states of the NATO-Russia Council, with two of them actually rotating to act as the Secretary General and Chairman of the NRC.

Russian Task Force Prepares for Counter Piracy Operations

A task force from the Russian Navy’s North Sea Fleet, led by the anti-submarine warfare ship RS Severomorsk made a call in the port of Souda Crete, between the 14th and 17th of January. During the stop-over, officers and marines from the task force took part in supplementary training at the NATO Maritime Interdiction Operational Training Centre. The RS Severomorsk will now head to the Horn of Africa to take part in Counter-Piracy operations following the training.

Successsful trial for ISAF transit arrangements

Afghan Helicopter Technicians Graduate in Russia

A second group of Afghan Air Force technicians successfully graduated from their NRC helicopter maintenance course in Russia on 28 September. The Afghan trainees completed a 90-day long course on the maintenance of Mi-17 helicopters, which included both theoretical and practical tuition at the Novosibirsk Aircraft Repair Plant, a world-class Russian helicopter maintenance training centre.
