NRC Telemedicine Project launched at kick-off conference

When natural or manmade disasters strike the lack of immediate access to medical specialists is a common problem. It is often the case that specialist doctors working in urban centres are not available at the time or place where disasters happen. To combat this issue and ultimately increase survival rates in emergency situations, NRC nations led by Russia and Romania are working together to develop a multinational telemedicine system capability, including an international network of medical specialists.

Counter Narcotics Training Project organises 2014 work

Representatives of NRC nations contributing to the Counter Narcotics Training Project met on 22 January in Brussels to coordinate work in 2014. In what looks set to be a busy year ahead, the project will continue to provide training courses for Afghan, Central Asian and Pakistani counter narcotics officers organised by the UNODC’s Regional Office for Central Asia.

Chiefs of Defence approve 2014 Military Work Plan

The 29 Chiefs of Defence of NATO-Russia Council nations approved the NRC Military Representative’s Work Plan for 2014 during their meeting on 22 January. Key areas of cooperation in 2014 will include continuing the fight against piracy and terrorism, search and rescue at sea, as well as increasing the work done together on the important topic of providing medical care for the military, building on the work done in 2013.

Experts develop military medical cooperation in 2013

Cooperation in the NATO-Russia Council on military medicine has risen sharply since 2010. The increase in cooperative military medical activities reflects how today multinational military operations are increasingly the norm, and sharing resources to make the most efficient use of materials and personnel is vital. To do this however, higher levels of interoperability are needed, in particular, to ensure that medical teams can work together to support the military’s health and medical requirements.

The NATO-Russia Council was briefed by The Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons on the work being carried out to eliminate Syria’s chemical weapons arsenal, on 20 November. NATO Ships Visit St. Petersburg

NATO ships assigned to the NATO Mine Counter-Measures Group arrived in St Petersburg for a scheduled port visit, on 10 October. The visit took place as part of continued NATO-Russia Council military cooperation, and provided an opportunity for naval counterparts to meet and exchange experiences. NATO-Russia Council nations' navies have several areas of shared interest, including counter piracy, counter terrorism, education, training, and search and rescue at sea.

A delegation from Russian Federation Navy ship Neustrashimiy visited NATO’s counter piracy flagship ITS San Marco in the Gulf of Aden. Ministers Launch Afghan Helicopter Project’s Second Phase
April, 23 2013

NATO-Russia Council Foreign Ministers officially launched the second phase of the Helicopter Maintenance Trust Fund today. Phase 2 will significantly expand the assistance the Trust Fund is providing to the Afghan Air Force. Not only will it offer more maintenance training on Mi-17 and Mi-35 helicopters, as well as spare parts. It will also support the Medical Evacuation capabilities of the Afghan Air Force by providing a conversion kit to transform a Mi-17 helicopter into a fully equipped flying ambulance.

Russian Task Force Prepares for Counter Piracy Operations
January, 27 2013

A task force from the Russian Navy’s North Sea Fleet, led by the anti-submarine warfare ship RS Severomorsk made a call in the port of Souda Crete, between the 14th and 17th of January. During the stop-over, officers and marines from the task force took part in supplementary training at the NATO Maritime Interdiction Operational Training Centre. The RS Severomorsk will now head to the Horn of Africa to take part in Counter-Piracy operations following the training.

NRC conference on countering improvised explosive devices

NRC Holds Seminar on High Visibility Events

Supporting Afghanistan’s Helicopters: 10 Years 10 Stories Anniversary Feature

In the space of two years the NRC Helicopter Maintenance Trust Fund has already become one of the NRC’s most high profile and successful cooperative projects. Afghan Helicopter Technicians Graduate in Russia

A second group of Afghan Air Force technicians successfully graduated from their NRC helicopter maintenance course in Russia on 28 September. The Afghan trainees completed a 90-day long course on the maintenance of Mi-17 helicopters, which included both theoretical and practical tuition at the Novosibirsk Aircraft Repair Plant, a world-class Russian helicopter maintenance training centre.

Helicopter Trust Fund project producing results

First Live NATO-Russia Counter terrorism exercises

Polish, Russian and Turkish fighter jets intervened in response to the simulated hijacking of a passenger aircraft by terrorists, during counterterrorism exercise "Vigilant Skies 2011", which took place between 6 and 10 June. The exercise was a joint demonstration of the operational readiness of the NATO-Russia Council's Cooperative Airspace Initiative (CAI). It is the first NATO-Russia system of its kind to be fielded and it was the first such joint, live-flying, real-time counter-terrorism exercise.

Action Plan on Terrorism 2008 implementation report

In line with the guidance by the Heads of State and Government, the NRC continues its work in implementing the NRC Action Plan on Terrorism adopted in December 2004 and, as stated at the NATO-Russia Summit in Bucharest on 4 April 2008, the fight against terrorism remains a key area of NRC cooperation. At their meeting of 28 July 2008, NRC Ambassadors noted a Mid-Year Implementation Report that provides an update on joint efforts carried out in the first half of 2008 in the framework of the Action Plan and discussed the way ahead in adapting their cooperation to the evolving nature of the threat.

The choir's trip to Brussels was specially timed to coincide with the anniversary of the creation of the NATO-Russia Council.
