Opening remarks by NATO Secretary General, Mr. Jaap de Hoop Scheffer at the Meeting of the NATO-Russia Council at the level of Defence Ministers Portorož, Slovenia
Ministers, Excellencies, Ladies and Gentlemen,
Bonjour. Dobriy Dyen'. Good afternoon. Welcome to this NATO-Russia Council in Defence Ministers' formal session.
Our discussion today will provide a timely opportunity for an exchange of views on the state of NATO-Russia defence co-operation.
It will allow us to compare notes on our priorities for the rest of the year and for 2007.
We are doing this against the background of a solid record of achievements in the NRC framework on defence and military issues. Of recent note, NATO-Russia cooperation achieved a new milestone with participation of the Russian Federation Ship Pitliviy in NATO's anti-terrorist operation in the Mediterranean, Operation Active Endeavour.
Nous allons, au cours de notre réunion, nous pencher sur les questions de sécurité internationale actuelles et les opérations et missions de l'OTAN en cours en Afghanistan, dans les Balkans, en Iraq et au Darfour, et débattre d'autres thèmes de préoccupation en rapport avec la sécurité internationale.
La réunion d'aujourd'hui offrira également une excellente occasion de poursuivre la discussion sur les possibilités de pousser plus loin la coopération pratique OTAN-Russie, en particulier sur les moyens de renforcer le volet opérationnel de notre partenariat.
Lors de la réunion qu'ils ont tenue à Sofia, les Ministres des affaires étrangères du Conseil OTAN-Russie ont approuvé une série de mesures destinées à faire progresser la relation OTAN-Russie dans divers domaines comme la coopération en matière de défense, l'intensification de la coopération dans la lutte contre le terrorisme et la multiplication des efforts visant à développer l'interopérabilité. Nous sommes en mesure, aujourd'hui, de dresser le bilan des progrès accomplis dans ces domaines et d'envisager les priorités pour l'avenir.
